Summer Needs – 2018
Summer vacation for school children is in full swing and it puts a further strain on family food budgets with children home for lunch each day. At the food shelf we attempt to give families with school-age children additional food and milk, however, summer is time when our donations, both food and money decline.
Again this year we are taking part in a program offered by Hunger Solutions called the Open Your Heart Challenge Grant which raises additional dollars based on the contributions received in July. We would encourage you to make a contribution of food or money during July to assist us in covering the additional expense incurred during the summer months. Thank you for your support in this effort on behalf of families in our community.
The Waconia Food Shelf is currently in need of the following items:
Priority
Items for kids’ lunch bags: collecting kid-friendly healthy food for summer lunches.
Priority
Personal care items such as toothbrushes (single pack, please, we cannot break a multiple pack apart), toothpaste, deodorant (men’s and woman’s), bar soap, shampoo, and women’s personal items such as tampax. Many of our clients are pursuing finding work and personal hygiene care is critical.
Helpful
Gluten-free items such as pasta, flour, baking mixes and cereal. Hearty soups that can be added to rice or noodles to make a meal are needed. Healthy “kid-friendly” items are also welcomed.
Watch our sign outside on the corner of Elm and Main for item requests.
